Hearing “Cincinnati Red, American Thoroughbred” made me so happy to hear. I can’t help but have a soft spot for a good old fashioned thoroughbred ❤. Although I appreciate the modern bred horses, I keep hoping to see a high performance TB rise through the ranks again.

Your last words in this video were if you have any problems, just take the shoes off and let the horse be a horse for a while! As an international trainer, Australia and Europe I agree totally! I would even go as far to say few horses compete every week, regardless of occupation. So I would like to talk about shoeing! The farrier in most cases is only trying to replicate the most natural ideal angles and lengths for each horse through trimming and providing the correct shoes. First have the farrier shoe the horse. Measure the toe and heel length and angles of front and back hooves. This gives a base line for what is in most cases reasonable and acceptable. lets say circa every 4 weeks, take the shoes off and work the horse as normal letting nature trim the hooves to the same toe and heel lengths and replace the shoes. That's correct, with uncomplicated horses, for most horses natural is best. There are times when this is not possible if remedial hoof care is warranted, then ring the farrier! The older I became, the less time underneath a horse shoeing becomes the norm, at first I felt guilty, but horses soon let me know that what I was doing to save my back and money was doing them a service I had previously never even thought of! Pay your farrier to make a double set of shoes and give you a lesson or two on how to tack on a shoe so you dont have call him if the horse loses a shoe and it can not be found! Then buy another set of shoes and play around altering the newly bought shoes into the shape the farrier made to fit as spares! Every owner needs to learn to tack on a shoe properly anyway! Just to add to that: A veterinary once told me to use 1 part chlorine to 20 parts water to make home made "chlorhexadine" as a basic stable antiseptic substitute! Yes, basic toilet chlorine! It is cheep, cheep! My horses swear by it! Regards from Europe at the moment!

This was great!! Adding the extra gallon of water before closing the lid makes total sense and I don't think it's in the instructions so thank you!!! My hay was looking cooked, not soft and steamy and am sure this will help a lot. Thanks again!!
